Many traditions and a few superstitions are practiced and honored
during this important festival. A sample:
Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival (Shang Yuan) is held on the last night of the festivities and features different animal-shaped lanterns, as well as the more traditional circular ones.
Red
Everyone should wear red on New Year’s Day since it is a happy color that will bring the wearer a sunny and bright future.
Cleanliness
The entire house should be cleaned before New Year’s Day. Sweeping or dusting on New Year’s Day is forbidden, since one could sweep away good fortune. All dirt and rubbish should be taken out the back door.
Firecrackers
Firecrackers are used to frighten away evil spirits and bring good fortune.
Laisee
On New Year’s Day, children and single friends receive red envelopes with silver coins inside. The coins are called laisee (pronounced LAY-SEE, meaning “good luck piece”).
Center Stage
In the lion dance, colorful lions dance before every door in the community. The lion is a symbol of good luck.
Well Wishes
Chinese characters are written on red squares or long sheets of paper and pasted around doors. Known as “nianhua,” these are well wishes for the New Year.
